Blower Door Testing in New England

The team at Heat Loss Management helps facilities ensure that they are not losing money because of issues with energy efficiency. No matter how high-tech or modern your HVAC system is, it can be completely negated by air leaks. Homeowners and businesses should always consider how energy-efficient their buildings are when making decisions about HVAC system installation or upgrades. Thankfully, our team can provide assessments and testing like the Blower Door Test which is the industry-standard in understanding how air leaks are potentially leading to decreases in energy efficiency. To set up a Blower Door Test for your building, please give us a call.

What Is A Blower Door Test?

Blower Door Tests rely on simple physics in relation to air pressure. Basically, if there is a differential in pressure, the air in the high-pressure area will move to the areas that are lower pressure in order to equalize. For example, when you blow up a balloon the pressure increases, but if there is a single pinhole the air will rush out of the balloon into the surrounding environment. Blower Door Tests work by adding a blower door which is specialized equipment that allows us to pressurize a building's interior. Measurements are taken of the air pressure inside the building over time. This helps us understand if there are air leaks. Just like with air pressure, temperature always tries to equalize. If pressurized air is escaping via leaks in a building's siding, then warm or cold air will be the same way.

How Can Blower Door Tests Help Improve My Building's Energy Efficiency?

Both single-family homes and businesses can utilize blower door testing. In fact, blower door testing is frequently part of new construction on residential and commercial buildings. This test is essential after construction to ensure there are no large air leaks that could potentially cause issues with your energy efficiency. Heating or cooling a property that has air leaks is a large waste of resources, electricity, and money. Not only is this bad for the environment, but it can put stress on a city's power grid by utilizing additional electricity to heat/cool a property.

Our team not only provides blower door tests but also Air Barrier Sealing. A blower door test simply shows if a building has issues with leaks or not. But Air Barrier Sealing can help find and seal air leaks within a building. The system works by using remote seal stations that distribute non-toxic water-based sealant in the air. This sealant plugs up the holes. So if, a building fails the Blower Door Test initially, this system can help address the problems.
